SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM “MAGNET”

IMAGINE aims at sharing knowledge at a large extent among citizens. In particular, since the beginning some of our members were the main promoters of the institutional participation and involvement to the programme Magnet, through the alliance with the “Gabriel Castellà i Raich” nursery/primary school in Igualada (Barcelona). Such project, which by now involves about 30% of the scientific members of ICE and the majority of the group members, aims at relieving the increasing problem of scholar segregation: the fact that families’ choices about which school they want to enrol their children often result in a tendency of segregate the least priviliged people in the same centers, making the education system within the same city very inhomogeneous in terms of socio-demographic distribution. This contributes further to the urban social segregation of migrant families and most vulnerable people. In the project, our institute is asked to provide an added value, through the implementation of activities related to space science and astronomy. This program has been or is currently at work in about 50 schools in Catalunya and usually such added values provided by the alliance with an excellence institution helps in relieve the scholar segregation in the municipality by attracting to the school also middle-class local families that would have chosen otherwise other centers.

Sample of activities done so far by our group members (representing about 70% of all activities done so far within the Magnet-ICE initiative):

  • 6/9/2021, DV: Magnet kick-out meeting with the teacher and the other entities
